His Life And His Legacy

The name Rav Breuer connotes integrity, adherence to tradition, leadership of a German Orthodox Kehila and perpetuation of the Hirschian philosophy. Rav Dr. Joseph Breuer, in the span of his long life (1882-1980), embodied not only these ideals but rebuilt a destroyed Old World Kehilla on the shores of the New World. Grandson of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch and son of Rav Dr. Salomon Breuer, both of whom had developed their K'hal Adath Jeshurun into one of the Torah Centers of pre-World War II Europe, Rav Breuer was the Rosh Yeshiva of the Frankfurt Yeshiva. His scholarship was evident in his manifold literary works, and he was a preeminent teacher and promulgator of the Hirschian Torah im Derech Eretz ideology. In New York, Rav Breuer built his K'hal Adath Jeshurun as the successor of the famed Frankfurt tradition and into a paradigm for Orthodox communal life. All areas of Jewish life-education, kashrus, mikveh, charitable institutions-are encompassed by the Kehilla, and KAJ, as it is popularly known, has had a decided impact on world-wide Jewry. Rav Breuer's towering Torah knowledge made him into one of the recognized leaders of our time. Rav Breuer: His Life and His Legacy provides an inspiring insight into the life of a Godol b'Yisroel who contributed to the resurgence of Torah today.
