Known by his title, "the Gerer Rebbe," and by the names of his Torah and Talmud commentaries (both called Sfas Emes, "the language of truth") Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh Leib Alter (1847-1905) earned a reputation as an extraordinary personality within and outside of the Hasidic world.
