Spanish and Portuguese Jewry Before and After 1492 is a unique contribution to the field of Jewish history. While the major studies include references to the Sephardic Jews, and other historical works concentrate on specific periods or areas of Sephardic settlement, this concise volume delves into the broad sweep of the history of the Jews of Spain from their original settlement in the Iberian Peninsula to modern times. The Edict of Expulsion of 1492 forced the Spanish Jewish exiles to seek refuge in other lands, among them neighboring Portugal; from these they spread in every direction of the compass. The diaspora of the Sephardic Jews had a profound influence on the course of world history and especially Jewish history. Currents in Judaism as diverse as the Reform movement and Hassidism were influenced by these exiled Sephardim. These are some of the topics explored by Prof. Altabe in this unusual book which takes the reader to Sephardic settlements in the Americas and back again to the Sephardic communities of Greece and the Balkans destroyed by the Nazis in the Holocaust. The history of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews covered in this volume was originally presented by Prof. Altabe in a six-part lecture series sponsored by the Sephardic House at Congregation Shearith Israel in NYC in the spring of 1992 in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the expulsion of Jews from Spain.
