This elegantly simple, yet contemporary mezuzah is hand fabricated and carved by Ruth Shapiro. It features a bone-like Hamsa with a silver bezel-set carnelian, and multipe inlaid brass rivets. The box is patinated copper with a soft, brushed finish. The background is a blackened, etched pattern (see detail) that highlights the ivory colored hand. There is a bezel set turquoise at the bottom and a sterling silver Shin at the top. The Shin is a Hebrew letter that begins the words Shaddai (God), Shalom (peace) and Shema ( a Jewish prayer, the most important!). The hand is said to be the hand of Miriam and supposedly wards off the misfortune caused by the "evel eye."
The box measures 3-3/4" long, not including the loops, 1" wide and 1/2" deep. It is lacquered to discourage tarnish.
This mezuzah case makes a wonderful wedding, graduation, house-warming or bar/bat mitzvah gift. How about one for yourself?
