In 1910, Bina Appleman, a young woman orphaned almost at birth, emigrated from a small shtetl in Poland, the country of her birth, to America, her adoptive country. Separated by circumstance from her family in Poland, with no knowledge of English, Bina struggled to survive, while, unbeknownst to her, the Jewish world of Europe, along with the lives of her father, siblings, and their families, was disintegrating, ultimately to be annihilated by the Nazis.Almost daily, from the moment she embarked on her journey at about age seventeen, until her death at age eighty-six, Bina describes her most intimate personal struggles, as well as disappointments and joys, in assorted notebooks and journals—a collection of over thirty-five volumes in all. She uses these diaries to help her analyze, express, or vent her most private thoughts. Paralleling the descriptions of her personal life, Bina Appleman, by now an educated and articulate woman, also comments on communal and national happenings, especially related to Jewish life in the post–World War II era—in Europe, America, and in Israel, the “country of her soul”—,thus enlightening us on what are now milestones of history. One cannot help but slowly identify with her, and even to love her, as these diaries captivate and draw the reader further and further into the mind and heart of this valorous woman. Acknowledging existential aloneness, and the contingency of the human condition, a quiet triumph of faith informs her daily existence as well as her hopes for the future as she endeavors to find ultimate meaning in her life
